Update: People's Building To Be Sold

A rare lunchtime weekday update: My reading comprehension skills apparently leave much to be desired. An Alert Reader just told me that according to Saturday's Daily News, the People's Building is going up for sheriff's sale.

The article isn't online, but I did confirm the information with a spokeswoman for the sheriff's office. The building will be sold May 1.

While the person I talked to at the sheriff's office didn't have details on why it's being sold, a check of the Allegheny County Real Estate Assessment website reveals that it's in arrears on its taxes; published reports have indicated that the mortgage is in default as well.

Let's hope someone with a real intention of reusing this landmark (the late Joe Bendel called it "McKeesport's battleship") is the winner. It's been neglected for too long, at the expense of other businesses and taxpayers in Our Fair City.

And a tip of the Tube City hard hat to my anonymous tipster.
