CMU Cameras Allow Citizens to See Air Pollution

Category: News || By Submitted Report

Above: The Mon Valley, as seen from one of CMU's "Breathe Cams."

. . .

A system of four cameras, called Breathe Cam, now keeps a constant watch on air quality over the Pittsburgh area --- including the Mon Valley --- providing citizens with a new interactive tool for monitoring and documenting visual pollution in the air they breathe and even tracing it back to its sources.

Funded by The Heinz Endowments as part of its Breathe Project, the camera system was developed and deployed by the CREATE Lab in Carnegie Mellon University's Robotics Institute. Anyone can access the cameras online at http://breatheproject.org/learn/breathe-cam, where images of the Downtown, East End and Mon Valley skylines are updated around the clock.

Using the interactive controls, people can zoom in on items of interest, whether it's a hovering brown cloud or individual smokestacks or coke plants. They can scan back in time to observe changes in visibility or to try to find the sources of dirty air. They also can skip back to particular dates and times that have been catalogued since the cameras were installed.

Penn State Campus Hosts Santa Breakfast Saturday

Category: Announcements || By Submitted

Before Santa makes his annual trip around the world, he will make a very special visit to Penn State Greater Allegheny as the campus' Alumni Society sponsors its 26th annual Breakfast with Santa at 9 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 6) in the Student Community Center. More than 100 disadvantaged children from the Mon Valley area will attend the event.

The event will include many activities and entertainment throughout the morning. Children will enjoy breakfast and candy before Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive on a fire truck. Each child will get to visit with Mr. and Mrs. Claus, and pick a present.

"The Alumni Society has been hosting the Breakfast with Santa for 26 years now," says Denise Kubli, president of the Penn State Greater Allegheny Alumni Society. "It is one of the ways in which we give back to the community and show our Penn State Pride. And, of course, we love getting the chance to brighten the holiday season for these children and their families."

This event is made possible through donations from local area businesses, alumni, advisory board members, staff, faculty and friends of Penn State Greater Allegheny.

Festival of Trees Opens Thursday in Renzie

Category: Announcements || By

One of the region's most popular holiday traditions returns to Renziehausen Park in McKeesport this week.

The 29th annual McKeesport Festival of Trees begins at 12 noon Thursday (Dec. 4) with nearly 100 hand-decorated Christmas evergreens representing churches, schools, social groups and other organizations on display in the park's Jacob Woll Pavilion.

An official tree-lighting ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Arboretum and Sycamore drives, near the pavilion entrance.

Hours for the show are 12 noon to 9 p.m. Thursday through Monday. Admission is $2 for adults, while children 12 and younger are admitted at no charge with donation of one non-perishable food item for local food pantries.

Activities include live entertainment, visits with Santa, and hayrides through Renzie, provided by McKeesport's public works department. The park will be lit by luminaria at night.

Refreshments will be on sale at a concession stand operated by students from McKeesport Area High School, while a bake sale will benefit McKeesport's Semper Fidelis Club.

In addition, the nearby McKeesport Regional History & Heritage Center will be open for extended hours throughout the Festival of Trees, with free popcorn, hot chocolate, a raffle and craft activities for kids, along with five additional themed trees on display.

The Garden Club of McKeesport also will be open throughout the festival, with crafts available for purchase.

Parking is available in the lot near the Renzie Park Senior Center, and handicapped parking for cars with proper license plates or placards is available in the circle around the pavilion.

Category: Announcements || By

We are still looking for McKeesport-area residents who want to write for this website, or host podcasts. ("McKeesport-area" is pretty loosely defined. We're talking about people who live in school districts such as McKeesport Area, South Allegheny, Elizabeth Forward, East Allegheny, Duquesne, Norwin and West Mifflin Area.)

We will provide the feeds, the audience, and all the technical help --- all you need to provide is your creativity and imagination! You can write or broadcast about news, comedy, sports, entertainment --- just about any subject you like. The only rule is that you have to either talk about the Mon Valley (or feature people from the Mon Valley) and your content should be PG-rated.
