McKeesport Symphony Receives State Grant

Category: Announcements || By Submitted Report

The McKeesport Symphony Orchestra has been awarded a $2,103 grant by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, state Sen. Jim Brewster said last week.

"The McKeesport Symphony Orchestra has been a key part of the arts community in the Mon Valley for years," Brewster said. "I am pleased that the symphony will receive this grant so it can continue to provide wonderful music and enjoyment for years to come."

Brewster, who represents parts of Allegheny and Westmoreland counties, said the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts was established by statute in 1966 to enhance the arts in Pennsylvania. Its mission is to develop the "excellence, diversity and vitality of the arts."

The grant program was started by the council in 1968. "The McKeesport Symphony has contributed immensely to the quality of life in the Mon Valley and has been an asset to our region," Brewster said.

The grant for the symphony was among a number of awards for groups throughout Allegheny County announced late last week by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.

Celebration of Carrie Deer Includes Film Debut

Category: Announcements || By Submitted Report

Homestead's Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area will host an evening of "food, fun and film" this Saturday at the historic Carrie blast furnaces in Rankin.

The event is a fundraiser for the restoration of the so-called "Carrie Deer" --- a scrap metal stag's head created by guerrilla artists inside the abandoned mill in the late 1990s --- and a show of support for the historic site itself.

Special guest hosts for the event are actor and writer David Conrad and WQED-TV producer and filmmaker Rick Sebak.

Following a special VIP reception at 6 p.m., the gates open to the public at 8 with food and beverages from local eateries, as well as the debut of a documentary about the Carrie Deer. The documentary by filmmakers Sharon and Ken Brown of Glyph Inc was sponsored by The Sprout Fund and Rivers of Steel.

International Village Webcast: Day 1

Category: Announcements || By

Visit McKeesport's International Village for official information, or follow McKeesport International Village on Facebook for regular updates.

Weather permitting, our live video webcast will begin when the entertainment begins at 6 p.m.

If for any reason (bad weather, bad Internet connection) we are not able to stream video live, we are taping the coverage and we will upload it one day later.

Unfortunately, WEDO (810) has informed us that they will not be carrying an hour of International Village this year.

Within Renziehausen Park, you will be able to hear International Village on an FM radio at 89.9. (Due to FCC regulations, we need to keep the signal confined as much as possible to Renzie.)

. . .

This year's International Village webcast is sponsored by Penn State University Greater Allegheny and McKeesport Housing Corp., as well as reader and listener donations. Thank you!

The Beg-a-Thon Continues

Category: Shameless Horn-Tooting || By

When public TV stations need to raise money, they put on programming that everyone wants to watch. We don't have that option, so we're using reverse psychology, and putting my ugly puss on camera.

Unless you want to see that again, please donate. Go to bit.ly/Begathon to make a secure donation via credit or debit card, and thanks for your ongoing support over the years.

. . .

ALSO: If you want to advertise during next week's International Village broadcast, we need your information NOW. Please email tubecitytiger@gmail.com or call us at (412) 614-9659. Rates are $250 for an hourly, 60-second spot, plus a banner ad on Tube City Online, or $100 for an hourly, 30-second spot, plus a banner ad on Tube City Online.
