Mansfield Bridge Project Starts Next Week

Category: News || By Submitted Report

Traffic restrictions begin next week on the W.D. Mansfield Memorial Bridge as a long-awaited $31 million rehabilitation of the span gets underway.

Allegheny County spokesman Kevin Evanto announced Wednesday that one lane in each direction will be closed on Monday and continuing through Thursday. Then, on Thursday, all traffic will be moved to the eastern side of the bridge --- the lanes normally used by traffic outbound from McKeesport --- so that work can begin on the western side of the bridge.

Signals were put in place earlier this month on both ends of the bridge to handle the new traffic patterns.

The 1,900-foot bridge across the Monongahela connects Dravosburg with the city and Glassport, and is a major artery for commuters heading from the Mon-Yough area to Pittsburgh and the South Hills. According to state Department of Transportation statistics, about 17,000 vehicles use Richland Avenue (more commonly known as Dravosburg Hill) daily. Richland connects the Mansfield Bridge to Lebanon Church Road and Pittsburgh-McKeesport Boulevard.

. . .

Opened in 1951, the Mansfield Bridge is owned by Allegheny County and was built by U.S. Steel's American Bridge Division using steel from Pittsburgh's old Wabash Railroad bridge. It's named for state senator, Allegheny County commissioner and Daily News publisher William D. Mansfield.

The reconstruction of the Mansfield Bridge is a three-year project expected to last through October 2014, Evanto said. The bridge will remain open to traffic throughout the project, though occasional delays are expected, he said.

Work will include repairing and painting the bridge structure, repairs and upgrades underneath the bridge, and replacement of the deck and pavement, along with new handrails the length of the bridge. The ramps leading to McKeesport and Glassport, and connecting the bridge to Maple Avenue in Dravosburg, also will be repaved, Evanto said.

New street lights will be installed above the bridge, and new navigational beacons will be installed below the bridge, he said.

General contractor on the project is Joseph B. Fay Co. of Tarentum, which submitted the lowest bid. The contract was awarded Jan. 10, Evanto said.

Regular updates will be available through the county's Mansfield Bridge website, he said.

Good to see this underway. I’m tired of riding that minefield that is the exit ramp on the McKeesport end. Wonder the trolley rails are still buried in the concrete of the bridge deck?
