Briefly Noted: 2013 'Mission on the Mon' Announced

Category: Announcements || By Submitted Report

High school students interested in working on non-profit service projects in the city are invited to get ready for next year's "Mission on the Mon."

A youth-development ministry of White Oak's Faith Lutheran Church and the Southwestern Pennsylvania Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mission on the Mon also partners with many local ministries and agencies as well as local government, said the Rev. Brian Evans, pastor.

Applications for next summer's week-long mission will be available in January from the church at 1656 Lincoln Way.

"Mission on the Mon" is a youth-focused, week-long Christian neighborhood immersion experience in McKeesport. Each day is filled with mission projects at a variety of locations and skill levels so that all can participate. The week includes worship, exploration of faith, and social activities, including trips to Kennywood downtown Pittsburgh.

Participants stay at Faith Lutheran Church on Lincoln Way.

Students who in Fall 2013 will be in grade 9 through 12 are invited to register. The cost is $150 per person, due June 10, and covers meals, transportation and other expenses, though students from outside the McKeesport area are responsible for their own transportation to White Oak.

Early Bird registration, due April 15, is $135. Some financial aid is available, Evans said.

Participants will be expected to participate in all activities to the best of their ability and engage in community activities. We will do our best to provide activities and projects that fit the skill levels of participants.

Professional staff members and counselors will be present at all times. Youth are required to stay with the group and lodge at the church for the entire event.

Adults who have a variety of skills and tools for carpentry, light construction, landscaping, etc., are needed and encouraged to register, with or without an accompanying congregation.

Adults who would like to be day volunteers may register for free and participate in option evening meals and activities at pro-rated costs. The church requires and will perform a background check for all participating adults.

Checks should be payable to Mission on the Mon, 1656 Lincoln Way, McKeesport 15131.
