Local officials are lauding U.S. Steel's opening of a new battery of coke ovens at its Clairton Plant.

Part of an ongoing $500 million improvement project at the plant, the new "C Battery" was dedicated today. Coke is a fuel made by superheating coal to remove impurities and is predominantly used in steelmaking. Gases produced by heating coal can be captured and used as fuel and to produce chemicals.

Steel industry analysts have praised U.S. Steel's decision to upgrade Clairton Plant, saying the improvements make the company more competitive. Environmentalists have also praised the decision to upgrade the plant.

The coke ovens replace units that were more than 50 years and will consume less energy and produce less air pollution, U.S. Steel officials said. Emissions from U.S. Steel's Clairton Plant have frequently been blamed for Allegheny County's failure to meet clean air standards.

Clairton Plant is the United States' largest coke works, producing 4.7 million tons annually, according to the company's website. C Battery is expected to produce nearly 1 million tons of coke per year.

Shown at today's dedication ceremonies are Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, Squirrel Hill Democrat; Allegheny County Councilman John DeFazio, Shaler Twp. Democrat, who also serves as state director of the United Steelworkers union; state Rep. Bill Kortz, Dravosburg Democrat; and Allegheny County Councilman Bob Macey, West Mifflin Democrat.
