Hello McKeesport! My name is Councilwoman V. Fawn Walker-Montgomery. It has been my distinct privilege and honor to serve the city of McKeesport. I am excited to announce my campaign for re-election.

My educational background includes a B.A. in Political Science and an M.S. in Criminal Justice Administration.

Since my term as Councilwoman started in January 2010, I have been busy serving the citizens of McKeesport and welcome the opportunity to do more for this great city. For example, I have conducted various Black History Month presentations in which I taught children the importance of politics at Francis McClure Intermediate School.

I currently serve on the Recreation Board; as Chair of the McKeesport Downtown Business Authority, as Vice Chair of the Home Rule Charter Committee and board member for the Carnegie Library of McKeesport.

In addition to my board work, I have written ordinances and resolutions on gun legislation and the development of council committees.

Prior to voting on any ordinances and resolutions, I conduct my own independent research so that the best solution is provided for McKeesport, versus a quick fix to the issue, or the most convenient for council.

Additionally, I have submitted reports and policy ideas to council on issues such as demolition of vacant property and ways to address community violence so that I may give a voice to the concerns of the citizens of McKeesport.

I have worked with local community groups, churches and the police and fire departments to organize events. In 2010, I worked with the McKeesport African American Political Coalition and Rainbow Temple's Operation Save Our Youth to organize a Day of Peace in Harrison Village. Over 500 people attended and observed local artists, vendors, and a basketball tournament.

Family members who lost loved ones to violence were given an opportunity to speak. Other events include 2010, 2011 and 2012 "Walk, Run and Ride Against Drugs, Violence and Abuse" and "Community Cleanup Days."

I also took the initiative to become a more knowledgeable elected official. More specifically, I paid to attend the Newly Elected Officials Course sponsored by the Local Government Academy. Here I learned about imperative laws such as the Sunshine Law, municipal budgeting, ordinances, resolutions and ethics in government.

In order to continue completing this work I need your vote on May 21, 2013.
