Towns May Get Help With Summer Flood Costs

Category: Announcements || By Submitted Report

Communities that faced heavy damage during severe summer storms and flooding in June and July may be eligible for state and federal grants to reimburse their costs.

A spokesman said Allegheny County has been added to the presidential disaster declaration covering damage caused by storms and flooding beginning June 26 and continuing through July 11.

The declaration covers all Allegheny County local governments, police departments, fire departments, emergency medical services, public works departments, water and sewer authorities, school districts, hospitals and certain private, non-profit organizations, a county spokeswoman said.

The declaration, approved by President Obama, makes federal funding available to eligible local governments and certain private, non-profit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by severe storms and flooding.

Organizations which believe they may be eligible to apply for funding should contact the Allegheny County Emergency Management Coordinator at (412) 473-2550.

Reimbursable costs incurred include damage to roads, bridges and public buildings as well as debris removal, personnel costs, vehicle and equipment use, and emergency protective measures taken to protect life and property before, during and after the storms.

Federal and state funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures for all counties in Pennsylvania.

Other counties included in the disaster declaration are Centre, Clearfield, Clinton, Crawford, Fayette, Huntington, Jefferson, Lawrence, Venango and Wayne.
