'Warming Centers' Will Open in City, Elsewhere

The Allegheny County Department of Emergency Services announced that some communities are opening warming centers.

A warming center for city residents will open at 8 p.m. tonight (Jan. 6) at the McKeesport Palisades, 501 Water St., Mayor Mike Cherepko announced.

The center will remain open indefinitely throughout the bitter cold temperatures, the mayor said, adding that residents who lose heat should contact Allegheny County Emergency Services at 2-1-1 to make arrangements.

Anyone in the city suffering a power outage should contact Duquesne Light at (412) 393-7000, Cherepko said.

City of Clairton: Open now until 4 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 8), Municipal Building, 551 Ravensburg Blvd. Clairton residents who need rides to the warming center can contact 9-1-1 for assistance.

Homestead: A warming center will be open 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday and Tuesday, at the Salvation Army Worship & Service Center 104 East Ninth Ave.

In Munhall, warming centers will open at 7 p.m. tonight at Fire Station 200 (13th at Martha streets), Fire Station 201 (1900 West St.), Fire Station 203 (3401 Main St.) and Fire Station 204 (1817 Whitaker Way). Residents are requested to bring a bag lunch or snack.

West Mifflin: Open now through 9 a.m. Wednesday (Jan. 8) at the Municipal Building, 3000 Lebanon Church Road.

In Westmoreland County, North Huntingdon Twp. emergency management has announced that if needed, Circleville Volunteer Fire Department will open as a warming center for residents of the township. The hall is at 129 Robbins Station Road. If you are a North Huntingdon Twp. resident in need of the warming center, contact township police at (724) 863-8800.

Elsewhere in Westmoreland, Sewickley Township emergency management says that residents can call the Westmoreland County Department of Public Safety at (724) 836-1551 for the location of the nearest warming shelter to your residence. A spokesman asked residents to try to stay with friends or family before calling "to conserve space for those who are in desperate need."
