Alumni Raise Money for Teen Victim's Family

The McKeesport Area High School Class of 1992 is raising money to help the family of a 14-year-old Founders' Hall Middle School student who died after being struck by a dump truck on Thursday.

Alyson Higdon, an eighth-grader from the city, was struck Thursday afternoon on O'Neil Boulevard as she crossed the street with friends. She died hours later at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC in Lawrenceville.

McKeesport and Allegheny County police are investigating. The truck driver's name has not been released by police.

Higdon's mother, Cindi, is a McKeesport alumna. The fundraiser has been set up through the website YouCaring.com and had raised more than $8,000 as of Saturday afternoon.

Donations may also be made to the Alyson Higdon Memorial Trust, c/o White Oak Branch of First Commonwealth Bank, 1527 Lincoln Way, McKeesport, PA 15131.

Higdon was born December 30, 1999, in Monroeville, the daughter of Cindi L. Tarsala Higdon of McKeesport and the late Joseph Daniel Higdon. A member of the Founders' Hall volleyball team, she attended First Evangelical Free Church in the city, and also was a member of the Junior Bowling League at White Oak Bowl.

In addition to her mother, Higdon is survived by Haylie, Caleb and Jonah Higdon at home; her grandparents, Rick and Sharon Tarsala of the city, Penny Higdon of Mt. Oliver, and Joseph Higdon of Elizabeth Twp.; great-grandmother, Dolores Kehrer of Mount Oliver; great-grandfather, Daniel Resavage of Leesburg, Fla.; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

Friends will be received from 12 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, March 9, at Gilbert Funeral Home and Crematory, 6028 Smithfield St., Boston, Elizabeth Twp. A funeral service will be held at First Evangelical Free Church, 4001 University Drive, at 11 a.m. Monday, March 10, with Pastor Kirk Albrecht officiating.
