This Just In

Category: Good Government On The March, Politics || By

Several people have emailed me this article from the Post-Gazette:

Last week, White Oak council President Jack Petro Jr. proposed changing the name of the McKeesport Area School District as one way to attract new people ...

Mr. Massung and Mr. Petro were involved in the effort that resulted in Penn State University's campus changing its name from Penn State McKeesport to Penn State Greater Allegheny in January 2007.

"After our Penn State satellite campus changed its name, student enrollment spiraled," Mr. Massung said.

"It's no secret McKeesport is a depressed city that's struggling to just survive," Mr. Petro said.

Wow. I'm going to go bang my head on the floor for a while.

It will be more fun than trying to respond to this.

I will have a response.

It might be composed mainly of four-letter words, but it will be a response.

. . .

Update: PittGirl reacts:

So by their brilliantly genius-y thought process that is probably being turned by mice in a cog, we could rename the Hill District to The Highland Estates and people will suddenly be all, "Hey! Let's move to The Highland Estates. Doesn't that sound like a place where we don't need to worry about getting murdered while we walk the dog at night?"

Like I said. Brilliant!

Homewood is now "Westhampsminstershire" and Lincoln/Lemington is now "Derbyshirbingham."

Spread the word, 'kay?

Your Comments are Welcome!

Well, I must say that while I don’t know anything about Messrs. Massung & Petro as a PROUD graduate of the MCKEESPORT Area School District, MCKEESPORT Senior High School Class of 1979, I think they both need to be run out of town on a rail. Hey, let’s not spend any effort or energy actually addressing any real issues, let’s just change the name and pretend the past 30 years never happened. Yeah, that’s the ticket. The hell with reality, let’s just change the perception.

I’m sorry but it seems to me that this kind of thinking is the sort of thing that facilitates decline, not turns it around.

Hmmmm. Ever since back when White Oak still had trenches to carry their drain water off and the streets were still oil sprayed dirt I wondered why they never built their own school. I guess they couldn’t break the habit of low taxes.

Friends of Paul Shelly & jason Togyer (though I don’t speak for him. He’s doing just fine without me. Can’t WAIT to see his tirade on this issue!!!),

Two White Oak Councilors want a Civil War …...

http://paulshelly.awptimus.com/?p=352

All elected officials, who I consider personal friends as well as colleagues, that I have discussed the proposed W.O. name change/Seccesion from the Union, such as Billy Kortz, Marc Gergely, Jim Brewster and Dave Donato are ardently opposed to the proposal. Good to see all of these folks unite and work together on a common cause and for the common good.

I didn’t ask all of these gentlemen to use their names together so I hope that none is offended. I doubt that they are. We are all one T.E.A.M. on this one.

McKeesport and our District do suffer from a “perception” problem.

We work hard to fix that every day and are making great strides.

Do people realize that our test scores seem low because No Child Left Behind FORCES us to include the scores of severely autistic children, which we serve many, in our test score averages?

Who else offers Academic and Vo Tech on one campus? Who has the lowest millage rates in ALL of Allegheny County? Who has produced leaders in all fields of endeavor as we have? How many State Championships does Norwin or EA possess? How many basketball dynasties like our Tigers through the years?

If Councilors or Real Estate agents can’t sell the MCKEESPORT Area School District to folks…

They need to find a new profession. They are not cut out for their present ones!

Additionally, Bill Kortz is holding a $250 a plate fundraiser at WestWood (formerly Duquesne Golf Club) from 6:30 to 8:30.

825 CommonWealth Ave.
West Mifflin, PA 15120.

Chief Onorato, Senators Logan and Costa, Reps. Gergely, Levdansky and Frankel and County Coucilors (and my boys!) Jim Burn and Bob “Mace” Macey will be there as well as our friend Jack Shea from the Allegheny County Labor Council.

I may have a very limited # of complimentary tickets at the door. Please let me know if you need one ASAP!

Or, just tell ‘em Sluggo sent you ;)...
..
Thank you for your support.

As always,

YOUR Councilman,

Paul “Sluggo” Shelly
