Update: Weather Service Posts Flood, Wind Advisories

Category: News || By Staff Report

The Mon-Yough area will be under a flood watch and a high wind watch on Monday and Tuesday as the East Coast braces for the impact of Hurricane Sandy.

Forecasters say the storm, which is expected to make landfall in southern New Jersey on Monday evening, will combine with a stalled cold front to dump three to four inches of rain on Western Pennsylvania this week.

Some locations could get more than two inches of rain on Monday and Tuesday alone, which could cause flooding and landslides, say meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Moon Township.

The region is also under a high wind watch. The NWS says western Pennsylvania could receive sustained winds from the northwest of 25 to 35 mph, with gusts of 50 to 60 mph. Those winds could knock down trees and power lines.

The watches extend through east central Ohio, northern West Virginia and western Maryland.

Higher elevations of western Maryland --- which may wind up receiving snow instead of rain --- are also under a winter storm watch. The National Weather Service says those areas could receive up to six inches of heavy wet snow and winds in excess of 40 mph.
