Bridge Linking Turtle Creek, NV Twp. Reopens

Category: Announcements || By Submitted Report

Local, state and federal officials this morning celebrated the completion of the Greensburg Pike Bridge with a ribbon-cutting.

The new 663-foot bridge connects North Versailles Twp. with Turtle Creek boro., crossing the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks and Turtle Creek itself. The former bridge, a steel truss structure, was built in 1925. It closed in November 2013 and was demolished.

Before closing, the former bridge carried upwards of 8,000 cars per day, linking Monroeville with Route 30 and serving the North Versailles Wal-Mart and the Great Valley shopping center.

Brayman Construction of Saxonburg was the general contractor on the $17 million project. Celebrating the opening of the new four-lane bridge on Monday were Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, U.S. Rep. Mike Doyle, state Reps. Joe Markosek and Paul Costa, and County Council Member Bob Macey.

"Residents of this area have been waiting for a long time for this bridge to open, but we think that the wait was worth it, and that drivers and pedestrians will be much safer with this new bridge," Fitzgerald said.

The new, wider bridge is curved, to align better with the existing streets, and includes new traffic signals. Two retaining walls were also constructed to improve the stability of a landslide-prone hillside, county officials said.

The bridge opened to traffic on Friday (Nov. 14) and all remaining work should be completed in about a month, county officials said.

"The Greensburg Pike Bridge is an example of how public affects the lives of Americans on a daily basis, and why upgrading it is important," Doyle said. "We have a responsibility to provide and maintain safe, efficient and reliable infrastructure in our communities."
