The McKeesport Heritage Center is a non-profit organization established to provide a place for people interested in the region to explore its history. Founded 16 years ago with 35 members, the society has since grown 1,360 strong.

Located in a new reading room and museum in the city's Renziehausen Park, the Heritage Center's next-door neighbor is McKeesport's famous restored 1832 schoolhouse.

The Center's reading room is the repository for city documents as well as historic material and memorabilia. On file are the records of the G.C. Murphy Company and many of the city's churches and civic organizations.

The Center also maintains a complete microfilmed record of the McKeesport Daily News from 1884 to the present as well as the Allegheny County Census from 1790 through 1920 and records from the McKeesport and Versailles and Richland Cemeteries.

Also on microfilm are the records of Fairview Cemetery, and partial records from the B'Nai Israel and Gemilas Chesed Cemeteries. Members are welcome to do their own searches.  Search fees done by the center are $15.00 per hour for non-members, $10.00 per hour for members, plus applicable postage and copies at 25 cents each.

In addition, large scrapbooks and photo files are maintained along with many secondary sources, including books, directories, and other research tools.

The Center's museum features an array of items from the city's distinguished past as well as exhibits on McKeesport Hospital and the U.S. Steel National Works.

The Center has been designated as the official repository for local historical material by the McKeesport City Council and is an excellent place for longtime residents, former denizens or recent transplants to begin discovering their roots!

The Heritage Center is located at 1832 Arboretum Drive, McKeesport, Pa 15132. The Center's museum and reading room are open most weekdays and Saturdays, but call (412) 678-1832 for details on hours and for information about special events.

Dues for individual members are $25 for the first year and $20 for additional years. Family memberships and higher levels -- from contributing member to life member -- are also available. High school or college students may join for free.

The Center focuses on aspects of our heritage to help promote understanding and appreciation of the various ethnic groups from which we all spring.  The multi-image slide presentation and talks of local historical people and groups are examples of reaching out to the community with programs of interest to all.  The Center provides a meeting place -- a focal point -- for groups involved in historical research.
