Pa. House Scholarship Deadline is March 1

Category: Announcements || By Submitted Report

The deadline for local high school seniors to apply for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives scholarship is March 1, state Rep. Bill Kortz has announced.

"The Pennsylvania House of Representatives provides two scholarships every year for Pennsylvania high school seniors," Kortz, a Democrat from Dravosburg, said this week. "No tax dollars are used for these scholarships --- they are funded entirely through private and corporate donations."

The scholarship provides assistance for tuition, fees and books only, Kortz said. To be eligible, applicants must be legal residents of Pennsylvania who are planning to attend a Pennsylvania college, university, or career school as a full-time student. They must be carrying a minimum 3.0 GPA, and be able to demonstrate that they volunteer for community service and extracurricular activities.

They should also have financial need, Kortz said. Children of legislators or legislative staff members are not eligible to apply.

The scholarship is administered by The Foundation for Enhancing Communities. For complete details, visit the website or call Kortz's office at (412) 466-1940.

Grand Jury Indicts 13 in Suspected Heroin Ring

Category: News || By Submitted Report

A federal grand jury in Pittsburgh has indicted 13 individuals in four separate, but related, indictments resulting from a multi-agency wiretap investigation, United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced today.

Several of the accused are from the Mon-Yough area, including Munhall, Rankin and East Pittsburgh.

A spokeswoman for Hickton's office said federal agents received permission to tap phone calls and text messages on four different cell phones between September and December last year. As a result of those wiretap intercepts, agents learned that a group of individuals was traveling to Brooklyn, N.Y., on a regular basis to obtain quantities of heroin and cocaine for distribution in the greater Pittsburgh area.

The four indictments are a result of that wiretap investigation, the spokeswoman said.

Residents Urged to Brace for Bitter Cold

Category: Announcements || By Submitted Report

With extreme cold weather in the forecast in the coming days, Allegheny County officials outlined the preparations that they have made and also offered tips and information for residents.

Temperatures in the McKeesport area are expected to reach 10 below zero (-10F) Monday night and rise to only 3 above zero on Tuesday afternoon, according to National Weather Service forecasters in Moon Twp.

The record low for today is -5F. It was set in 1884 and tied in 1942, the NWS said. The last time that a high temperature was below zero in Pittsburgh was Jan. 19, 1994.

Dr. Karen Hacker, director of the Allegheny County Health Department, urged residents to take precautions to protect themselves and their health during this weather: "Stay indoors as much as possible. If you must go outside, wear several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing rather than one layer of heavy clothing. Wear mittens, wear a hat, and cover your mouth with a scarf to protect your lungs."

For those who must be outdoors, Hacker also cautioned that they watch for signs of frostbite and hypothermia. Frostbite can occur within 30 minutes at a wind chill temperature of -19, within ten minutes at -33 and within five minutes at -48.

Hypothermia --- when the body's temperature drops below 95 degrees --- can occur outdoors or even indoors. If you can't maintain a house temperature of 70 degrees, dress warmly and use blankets and hats to keep warm, especially for infants, the elderly and the chronically ill.

The Department of Emergency Services will be coordinating with all emergency management coordinators throughout the county to provide response and assistance as needed, said Alvin Henderson, chief of Allegheny County's Department of Emergency Services.
