McKeesport Housing Corp. is looking for qualified contractors, and has arranged training necessary for those contractors to be trained in managing lead-based paint hazards.
The non-profit corporation is sponsoring classes to train applicants as Lead-Based Paint Supervisors. The day-long classes will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 24 to 27 at the Brewster Building, corner of Ohio and Brownlee streets. There will be a one-hour break for lunch each day.
The classes cost $550 and registration is required by March 14. For more information, call (412) 664-7003.
McKeesport Housing Corp. is a non-profit agency whose work includes overseeing and often helping to fund renovations and repairs to older homes in the city, and the organization needs qualified contractors, says Jim Haughey, executive director. The lead-based paint supervisor training is required for many renovation projects.
To perform work for the MHC, Haughey says, contractors must have liability insurance, register with the state of Pennsylvania, have proof of worker's compensation insurance, and hold necessary EPA certifications. Interested contractors should contact MHC for details at (412) 664-7003, or visit its website.

The first meeting of a new city committee on community issues will be held March 19 at the Corpus Christi Parish Hall on Market Street, Downtown.
Formed by McKeesport Mayor Mike Cherepko, the Mayor's Committee on Community Issues is a "work in progress," says Angelia Christina, the city's Fair Housing Officer.
The MCCI will hold a public meeting every month, in different wards of the city, Christina says. "The purpose of the MCCI is to attempt to address issues, or perceived issues, at a neighborhood level, to the combined best of our ability," she says.
"The thinking is that if we have an informal and relaxed setting, in the neighborhood, folks may be more likely to contribute rather than going to a council meeting," Christina says. "Hopefully, if this works, we can start to find collective solutions to city problems, ward by ward."

Reader Donn Nemchick writes:
I contend that if Saints & Sinners were a slot/poker machine parlor the opposition would be much much less.
Most likely "customers" would be lined up from Christy Park to Renzie Park to feed those machines hoping for a winning hand. Politicians and civic leaders would trip all over themselves to attend the ribbon cutting and grand opening.
So "pick your poison" (rigged gambling or sleaze) for what type entertainment should open in McKeesport.

A "gentlemen's club" featuring all-nude female dancers is scheduled to open Friday in Christy Park, causing consternation among some residents and a pledge from McKeesport Mayor Mike Cherepko to block its opening.
According to published reports and advertisements, "Saints & Sinners Gentlemen's Club" will open on Valentine's Day in the former Chick's Grill at 3711 Walnut St., offering free beer and chips.
The club does not have a permit to serve food from the Allegheny County Health Department or a liquor license, according to Jennifer Vertullo in the Daily News.
Under Pennsylvania law, establishments that have fully nude dancers are not permitted to have liquor licenses. They may operate as so-called "bottle clubs," where patrons bring their own drinks or where drinks are provided for free.
Allegheny County deed records indicate the building is owned by the same Blairsville-based company that owns the Tri-Star Motors chain of car dealerships. Vertullo reports that Saints & Sinners will be operated by Scott Birdseye of Irwin.

Our new talk-show, done in conjunction with WEDO (810), goes live tomorrow, Feb. 14. "Two Rivers, 30 Minutes" will air on WEDO at 9:30 a.m. Fridays.
Appropriately enough, our first guest is McKeesport Mayor Mike Cherepko. (The show was taped before news broke about the new strip club in Christy Park, so our topics are more mundane -- snow removal, demolition of blighted properties, and the new playground up in Highland Grove.)
The show also will be available as a free digital download, and as a podcast on iTunes and (we hope) Stitcher. When it's live and available, we'll provide a link.
Our guest on Feb. 21 will be Dan Cessna, District 11 executive for PennDOT, who will discuss the upcoming project to widen Lincoln Way in White Oak, plus other road improvements in the Mon-Yough area.
Also new: "McKeesport History Minutes," done by Andi Cartwright in cooperation with the McKeesport Regional History & Heritage Center. We are trying to do four per month, and those are airing on WEDO as time permits. They also will be available as digital downloads via iTunes and elsewhere.
