Thanksgiving Leftovers

Category: Commentary/Editorial || By

Phil Musick called them "things I think I think." Bruce Keidan called them "loose items from a tight-leaf notebook." They're thoughts that don't fit anywhere else.

I call them "cluttered items from an empty mind." Because if a cluttered desk is the sign of a cluttered mind, what does an empty desk signify?

. . .

We watched a little bit of "Lady Gaga and The Muppets" last night. I wonder how many puppeteers it takes to operate Lady Gaga?

. . .

Joan Jett and The Blackhearts were in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Dear Lord. Punk rock is truly dead.

. . .

Andi Luketic Cartwright, who operates the "McKeesport Memories" Facebook page, found this ad for "Dr. John" in the archives of the McKeesport Regional History & Heritage Center. I think he was in the right place, but it must have been the wrong time.

. . .

The reliably funny (and notably liberal) Charlie Pierce, who regularly punctures pomposity for Esquire magazine's website, demolished New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd this week, whose family he described as "the clan in 'Three Cheers For The Irish,' had but Thomas Mitchell been Boris Karloff."

From Pierce's post comes my new catchphrase: "Have the kittens stopped screaming, Maureen?"

. . .

Mark Evanier says, "I know they don't mean it the wrong way but it still jars me when I post an obit on Facebook and hundreds hit the 'like' button."

UPMC: Hospital Employee Looked in Patients' Files

Category: News || By

A former employee of UPMC McKeesport hospital looked up the computer records of some 1,300 patients without authorization and for no job-related reason.

Another employee discovered what had happened and alerted supervisors, a UPMC official said.

The health system has reported the security breach to McKeesport police, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has also been notified, as required under the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or "HIPAA."

The employee, whose name was not released, has been fired, according to a UPMC spokeswoman.

John Houston, UPMC's vice president of privacy and information security, today issued an apology and said that "patient care was never affected."

Private information that was potentially accessed included names, dates of birth, types of illnesses and treatments, and Social Security numbers. UPMC is contacting patients in writing if their information was accessed, a spokeswoman said.

Towns May Get Help With Summer Flood Costs

Category: Announcements || By Submitted Report

Communities that faced heavy damage during severe summer storms and flooding in June and July may be eligible for state and federal grants to reimburse their costs.

A spokesman said Allegheny County has been added to the presidential disaster declaration covering damage caused by storms and flooding beginning June 26 and continuing through July 11.

The declaration covers all Allegheny County local governments, police departments, fire departments, emergency medical services, public works departments, water and sewer authorities, school districts, hospitals and certain private, non-profit organizations, a county spokeswoman said.

The declaration, approved by President Obama, makes federal funding available to eligible local governments and certain private, non-profit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by severe storms and flooding.

Organizations which believe they may be eligible to apply for funding should contact the Allegheny County Emergency Management Coordinator at (412) 473-2550.

Looking Back: McKeesport's Kennedy Connection

Category: History || By

Other Tube City Almanac stories about Kennedy and McKeesport:

. . .

McKeesport Mayor Andrew "Greeky" Jakomas greets President John F. Kennedy upon his arrival in the city, Oct. 13, 1962. Kennedy, campaigning on behalf of Democratic congressional candidates, spoke at what was then a municipal parking lot on Lysle Boulevard between city hall and The Daily News Building.

"The first time I came to this city was in 1947, when Mr. Nixon and I engaged in our first debate," Kennedy said, to the laughter and applause of the audience. "He won that debate, and we went onto other things. We came here to debate the Taft-Hartley law, which he was for and I was against."

Audio of Kennedy's speech in McKeesport is available via YouTube.

Here, dignitaries, including sculptor Percy Bryant Baker, unveil a statue of Kennedy on Feb. 28, 1965 along Lysle Boulevard, at the exact location where Kennedy spoke in 1962.

Fundraising for the Kennedy statue in McKeesport began almost immediately following the president's assassination on Nov. 22, 1963. McKeesport's Kennedy statue is nine feet tall and stands on an eight-foot granite base, and is believed to be among the first --- if not the first --- statue of Kennedy erected following his death.
